Resi ne' governi delle faccende e tutto quello insomma che sagacemente o trascuratamente con prudenza o con piet� o con magnanimit� hanno in esse operato come quelli che cono scevano la istoria essere veramente lo, specchio della vita umana; nonper narrare asciuttamentei casi occorsi a un principe o d' una repubblica, ma per avvertire i giudizi i consigli, i artiti edi maneggi degli uomini cagione poi delle l'e lici ed infelici azioni; il che � _proprio l' anima dell' istoria e quello che in vero insegna vivere, e fa gli uomini prudenti, e che appresso al pia cere che si trae del vedere le cose passate come presenti �' il vero fine di quella. Per la qual cosa avendo' io preso scriver la istoria de'ncki l'i�s_imi artefici per giovare all'arti', quanto pa tiscono le forze mie ed appresso per o�orarle ho tenuto quanto io poteva ad imitazione di cosi valenti uomini il �medesimo modo e mi sono ingegnato non solo di - dire quel che hanno fatto ma di scegliere ancora discorrendo il ine glio dal buono e l'ottimo dal migliore e notare un poco diligentemente i modi le arie le ma niere, i tratti e' le fantasie *de' pittori e degli scultori investigando, l quanto pi� diligente mente ho saputo di 'far conoscere a quelli che.
