Ne a Baltimore, en janvier 1811 Edgar Poe etait d'une famille honorable. Son pere avait etudie en droit. Pendant son stage, il preferait les coulisses du theatre au cabinet de l'avocat chez lequel il etait place et il y devint amoureux d'une actrice anglaise nommee Eli zabeth Arnold. Il l'enleva, l'epousa, se fit comedien et courut le monde avec elle. Ils moururent tous les deux, laissant trois jeunes enfants dans la misere. Edgar Poe, l'aine des trois, n'avait que six ans. Il y aurait la une premiere excuse a son inconduite s'il n'avait ete adopte par un riche marchand, M. John-allan, qui fut pour l'orphelin le meilleur des peres, et qui ne negligea rien pour son education.
Pendant qu'il terminait ses etudes a l'universite de charlotte-ville, le jeune Edgar, remarquable deja par son esprit et son adresse gymnastique, habile nageur, fort a l'escrime, cite par son eloquence dans les con ferences litteraires, sembla vouloir se distinguer en core plus par sa dissipation son intemperance et ses exces en tous genres. Ses premieres dettes furent payees par M. Allan; mais ses creanciers devinrent si nom breux, qu'il vit se tarir la source qui avait pourvu libe ralement a ses prodigalites. Quoiqu'il se reconciliat deux ou trois fois avec ce genereux bienfaiteur, ce fut pour l'irriter bientot par de nouvelles extravagances.
