In the first Lecture I have considered the Veto of Positivism, which meets us at the very threshold of our inquiry, and claims the right to prohibit all belief in a Personal God as an attempt to travel beyond the limits of ex perience. The second Lecture deals with the question of Materialism, which is so prominent in the present day. I have included in it an account of two treatises of Du bois-reymond, on T/ze Lz'mz'fs of Science and Enig mas of i/ze and of the controversy which their publication excited in Germany. The whole controversy appears to me to illustrate in a remarkable way the theory of modern Materialism and its real bearing upon the sub ject of this inquiry.
