Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Natural Theology and Modern Thought: The Donnellan Lectures

In the first Lecture I have considered the Veto of Positivism, which meets us at the very threshold of our inquiry, and claims the right to prohibit all belief in a Personal God as an attempt to travel beyond the limits of ex perience.

The second Lecture deals with the question of Materialism, which is so prominent in the present day. I have included in it an account of two treatises of Du bois-reymond, on T/ze Lz'mz'fs of Science and Enig mas of i/ze and of the controversy which their publication excited in Germany. The whole controversy appears to me to illustrate in a remarkable way the theory of modern Materialism and its real bearing upon the sub ject of this inquiry.

The chief cause, however, of the prevalent habit of depreciating the evidences of Theism.
