Nathan Denaby took the fledgling company his father had started in 1770 and built it into a thriving, respected empire. The elder Denaby's had always expected that Nathan, being the eldest son, would one day take control of the family haulage business. What proved to be a major challenge, however, were Nathan's ambitions to diversify the company into hitherto uncharted waters! His seemingly impossible dreams would be the root of much discord that would almost tear the close-knit family apart. However, the foundation created by Nathan Denaby would flourish for five generations, until a disaster beyond the control of Nathan's great, great grandson, George Denaby, would bring them to the brink of ruin. The Denaby Company traded in haulage, stonemasonry and building, farming, milling and brick making, providing the family with work and prosperity for over one-hundred-and-sixty years. Nathan's love for life and two beautiful women, one titled, would bring him fame and fortune, his life climaxing when he finally married the woman he let slip through his fingers forty years earlier. However, future generations of Denaby's found the cut-and-thrust of commerce extremely challenging, some of their decisions putting at risk the empire that Nathan Denaby had built almost single-handed. Spanning the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries the story revolves around the challenges facing the Yorkshire family and their struggle to maintain the traditions and values set by Nathan.
