Officers Tara Winter and Michael Frante have caught some bad cases in their time as CID Homicide detectives, but never anything like this. As Tara works on her own to catch the Cyborg Strangler, having given up on the FBI investigation, she is sidetracked by the utter horror and depravity of the case she and Michael catch. The case both draws them together and pushes them apart. Tensions run high as neither of them can find much faith in humanity. They wonder: is what they do ever for the greater good? ---------------------------------------------------------- EXCERPT FROM BOOK Why were tweakers always such bad liars? Gone to see a play? Utterly ridiculous. "And I come back to find that Kelli ain't breathing. I fairly well shook her and tried to do CPR myself, but it was too late. The paramedics told me there wasn't nothing I could have done. Said that Lissa must have put a pillow over her, can you believe that? Why would she do that to my baby?" "I don't know ma'am. I don't know. I'm going to need you to come back to the station and tell me that in more detail, will that be alright?" The woman nodded silently. "Do you like cats? I have a cat named Marlin in my car, and he'd love to keep you company while I check out some stuff here. How does that sound?" Again, the woman nodded, and Tara lead her to the car and helped her get in the passenger's seat. As if knowing what was required of him, Marlin purred and immediately curled up in her lap. "Keep an eye on her," Tara said to the beat cop, jerking her thumb at the car. By the time all of this had taken place, and Tara made her ways towards the house, she spied Michael Frante walking in. He was wearing jeans and a t-shirt, his credentials on a chain around his neck. "Frante," she said. "Hold up." "Thanks for having dispatch wake me up." "Very welcome. It'd be ours in the morning anyway. Now we're dealing with a fresh scene. Did you a favor." "You speak to a Ms. McMahon?" "That the mother?" "Yeah." "Yeah she's in my car. I talked to her. She didn't tell me anything I didn't know. Said the baby had a pillow put over her by the babysitter." "That's what she said? A pillow?" "Yeah why?" "If that's what helps her cope, then fine. But we can't enter that into any official record, because that is not what happened. I can tell you that for damn sure." "What did happen?" "Probably best you come look for yourself, Winter. Hope you didn't just eat." AUTHOR'S NOTE: This is a story with an HEA. Story contains mature themes and language, and is intended for 18+ readers only.
