The book explores how Wadlin pulls himself out of his slump through self-education and determination. He starts working to pay off his debts, and with the help of all of his newly acquired knowledge from his time at the library, he figures out the best ways he can make payments in a manner that would benefit him and pay off his debts as well. He gets so good at what he does that he starts giving other people advice on budgeting and managing their money as a profession. Wadlin finally develops a vision for his life. He has goals for himself. He starts to work towards his goals, armed with knowledge and experience unparalleled to what anyone could learn in a business school for four years. Wadlin aims to start his own business; he decides that is the goal he wants to work towards, and he manages to do so in his own unique and creative way.
