Nous arrivâmes chez la duchesse à son réveil. Elle fut ravie de me voir, me trouva charmante. Elle n'avait garde, au fort de sa prévention, d'en juger autrement. Après quelques mots qu'elle me dit, quelques réponses fort simples, et peut-être assez plates que je lui fis: Vraiment, dit-elle, elle parle à ravir; la voilà tout à propos pour m'écrire une lettre à M. Desmarets, que je veux qu'il ait tout à l'heure. Tenez, mademoiselle, on va vous donner du papier, vous n'avez qu'à écrire. Eh ! quoi, madame ? lui répondis-je fort embarrassée. Vous tournerez cela comme vous voudrez, reprit-elle; il faut que cela soit bien: je veux qu'il m'accorde ce que je lui demande. Mais, madame, repris-je, encore il faudrait savoir ce que vous lui voulez dire. Eh non ! vous entendez. Je n'entendais rien du tout; j'avais beau insister, je ne pouvais la faire expliquer. Enfin, rejoignant les propos décousus qu'elle lâcha, je compris à peu près de quoi il s'agissait. Je n'en étais guère plus avancée, car je ne savais point les usages et le cérémonial des gens titrés, et je voyais bien qu'elle ne distinguerait pas une faute d'ignorance d'une faute de bon sens. Je pris pourtant ce papier qu'on me présenta, et je me mis à écrire, pendant qu'elle se levait, sans savoir comment je m'y prendrais; et, écrivant toujours au hasard, je finis cette lettre, que je lui fus présenter, fort incertaine du succès. Eh bien ! s'écria-t-elle, voilà justement tout ce que je lui voulais mander. Mais cela est admirable, qu'elle ait si bien pris ma pensée. Henriette, votre soeur est étonnante. Oh ! puisqu'elle écrit si bien, il faut qu'elle écrive encore une lettre pour mon homme d'affaires; cela sera fait pendant que je m'habille. Il ne fallut point la questionner cette fois-là sur ce qu'elle voulait mander. Elle répandit un torrent de paroles, que toute l'attention que j'y donnais ne pouvait suivre; et je me trouvai encore plus embarrassée à cette seconde épreuve. Elle avait nommé son procureur et son avocat, qui entraient pour beaucoup dans cette lettre; ils m'étaient tout à fait inconnus, et malheureusement je pris leurs noms l'un pour l'autre. L'affaire est bien expliquée, me dit-elle après avoir lu la lettre; mais je ne comprends pas qu'une fille qui a autant d'esprit que vous en avez puisse donner à mon avocat le nom de mon procureur. Elle découvrit par là les bornes de mon génie. Heureusement je n'en perdis pas totalement son estime. Pendant que j'avais fait toutes ces dépêches, elle avait fini sa toilette, et ne songea plus qu'à partir pour Versailles. Je la suivis jusqu'à son carrosse; et lorsqu'elle y fut montée, et que ma soeur qu'elle menait eut pris sa place, au moment qu'on allait fermer la portière, et que je commençais à respirer: Je pense, dit-elle à ma soeur, que je ferais bien de la mener tout à l'heure avec moi. Montez, montez, mademoiselle; je veux vous faire voir à madame de Ventadour. Je demeurai pétrifiée à cette proposition; mais surtout ce qui me glaça le coeur fut cet habit emprunté pour deux heures, avec lequel je craignis qu'on ne me fit faire le tour du monde; et il ne s'en fallut guère. Mais, malgré ces considérations, il n'y avait pas moyen de reculer; je n'étais plus au temps d'avoir une volonté, ni de résister à celle des autres. Je montai donc, le coeur serré; elle ne s'en aperçut pas, et parla tout le long du chemin. Elle disait cent choses à la fois, qui n'avaient nul rapport l'une à l'autre; cependant il y avait tant de vivacité, de naturel et de grâce dans sa conversation, qu'on l'écoutait avec un extrême plaisir.
