Publisher's Synopsis
The section Symphonies, Concertos and Overtures containing approximately 48,000 sheets of music, allows users for the first time to have access to the collection's approx. 1400 instrumental compositions. One focus for the collection are the 210 symphonic works by brothers Johann Gottlieb and Carl Heinrich Graun, who as concertmaster and court orchestra conductor respectively had a considerable impact on musical life in 18th century Berlin. The collection also includes almost all the instrumental works of two other Berlin masters, Christoph Schaffrath and Johann Gottlieb Janitsch. One important find is the previously unknown double concerto in C minor for the oboe or flute, bassoon, strings and basso continuo ascribed to Georg Friedrich Händel. The violin concerto in D major by Vivaldi's student, Johann Georg Pisendel too represents a valuable addition to the small body of works produced by the most important violin virtuoso of the Bach era. The largest number of individual compositions in the collection are in fact concertos. One example is the previously unknown flute concerto by Johann Joachim Quantz.
