Malloch was a Scottish poet and playwright, whose work was praised by Hugh MacDiarmid (who called him 'one of our greatest twenty', and dedicated to Malloch his poem 'The Sauchs in the Reuch Heuch Hauch').The thirty poems in this volume were collected in a published work of the same title in 1932, by which time it had expanded to seventy sonnets.

written in black ink on ruled paper to rectos only, some light drafting throughout, a couple of blank leaves preceding text, the second of which with faintly visible erasure of first line of opening sonnet (subsequently transposed to following leaf), pp. [65], 12mo, original notebook of quarter orange cloth with patterned paper sides and endpapers, the backstrip and upper board lettered in the author's holograph (with his attractive bookplate to the latter), some light soiling, staples at centre slightly rusted, very good
