Novela histórica de acción y aventuras. La acción se sitúa en el París de comienzos del siglo XIV. El protagonista, Jules de Chartres, es un templario que ha regresado a Francia, acompañando a su Gran Maestre, para convencer al papa y poder iniciar así una nueva cruzada con el fin de reconquistar los Santos Lugares. Escrita en forma autobiográfica, el personaje principal nos cuenta cómo, ante la inesperada detención de los miembros de su orden por parte del rey de Francia Felipe IV "El Hermoso", se ve obligado a custodiar una de las más importantes reliquias de la cristiandad. Una vez en la capital del reino, no puede evitar volver a sentir el amor no correspondido que tuvo por una mujer, Jocelyne, la cual fue la causa directa de su "huida" hacia la orden del Temple. Los juegos del desamor acompañan al protagonista en su afán por proteger la reliquia y en sus intentos por liberar a sus "hermanos" de las garras del rey de Francia y de la Inquisición. Al mismo tiempo se apresurará a poner a buen recaudo los tesoros del Temple que yacían escondidos en el pasadizo por el que escapó junto con otros miembros de la orden. A medida que transcurren los acontecimientos, Jules empieza a sentir los supuestos efectos que la reliquia obra en su cuerpo y en su espíritu; efectos que van aumentando progresivamente a medida que evoluciona hacia lo que él piensa que se trata del "Gran Alquimista". Efectivamente, esos "poderes" le brindarán la ayuda necesaria para poder continuar por el camino, tanto físico como espiritual, que había iniciado, cosa que le llevará a convertirse en Gran Maestro Espiritual y le ayudará a desentrañar los secretos que la orden del Temple mantenía escondidos. La novela mantiene íntegros los hechos históricos del momento, así como la veracidad de los personajes reales que se suceden, los cuales interactúan con otros ficticios, intentando dar posibles respuestas a los misterios acaecidos.
