Publisher's Synopsis
After swindling a swindler, Rachael Kenney flees Chicago to Missouri where she lives tucked away from the war until spring of 1862 when a corrupt Pinkerton detective and acting federal agent, coerces Rachael into espionage. She impersonates a captured Confederate spy entrusted to purchase rifles from secretive arms merchants in Provincial Canada, to lure them into a trap. But guns are only the ante in a conspiracy to force the United States into a war with England, as the American Civil War rages on. A European dignitary at the core of the plot seduces Confederate Secretary of War, Judah P. Benjamin-who sees his fledging country withering from dwindling resources-into a devil's bargain that sets him against Rachael. Rachael's and Judah's trajectories run their disparate courses until colliding as saboteurs launch an attack in Washington D.C.
