Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Life and Labour of the People in London, Vol. 3: Religious Influences; The City of London and the West End
There is here an evident and not unsuccessful effort to fill a place as a City church. Twice a week, on week-days, there is a service at with special addresses from noted preachers, each of whom usually gives a course. The object is to secure the attendance of men in their lunch hour, and so bring their daily lives under the in?uence of religion. NO doubt the attendance varies greatly with the reputation of the preacher, but as a rule it is disappointingly small. On one Wednesday we counted twenty persons - ten women, nine men and a boy - on another there were only five women and four men present. 80 large a proportion of women in a City audience is remarkable.
