Tal es el otro sistema, que, como se echa de ver, es diametralmente opuesto al ar�bigo � orien tal; mas no ha faltado tambien quien, como el ingl�s Warton niegue completamente la in fluencia de ambos elementos, el oriental y el g�tico, sosteniendo y afirmando que en las bell�simas concepciones de la mitolog�a griega y pagana, en los cuentos milesios y aun en la novela tal cual existia en la edad media, se encuentran ya sobrados materiales para que escritores dotados de mediana imaginacion pudiesen, con los elementos propios y las ideas mismas de la sociedad en que vivian, formar el sencillo y a veces mon�tono artificio de los libros de caballer�as. Esta opi nion (4) ha sido, como era de esperar, rudamente combatida por los partidarios de los dos sistemas arriba expuestos, aunque, a nuestro modo de ver, injustamente, porque ora la supongamos im pregnada del elemento g�tico � modificada por el oriental, ora la miremos como producto na tural y espont�neo de la sociedad y costumbres de los siglos medios, preciso es admitir que la novela caballaresca tuvo origen y principio en la griega y romana y que en las ficciones de An tonio Di�genes, Heliodoro, Jamblico, Aquiles Tacio, Longo, Chariton y otros autores griegos, as� como en las de Petronio y Apuleyo, se encuentran ya muchos de los elementos que entraron mas tarde en la formacion de los libros de caballer�as.
