Independamment d'une quantite de monographies toutes neuves sur des points difficiles de lexicographie, notre livre presentera un assez grand nombre d'etudes grammaticales qu'on chercherait vainement ailleurs. Quelques - unes, outre l'interet qu'elles olfrent au point de vue de la grammaire histo rique, pourront etre d'une haute utilite pour tous ceux qui attachent du prix a suivre les meilleures traditions de la langue tels sont nos longs memoires sur l'ellipse du pronom personnel (tome n, pag. 185 sur la pluralisation des termes abs traits (t. I, p. 351 etc., etc.
Une introduction etendue resume l'esprit du livre, cons tate tout ce qui en ressort, et complete souvent, par rapport a la langue du dix-septieme siecle en general, ce que nous n'avons pu developper suffisamment dans le Lexique. Non content de signaler les caracteres principaux de la langue de Corneille, nous etablissons sans trop sortir de notre cadre les caracteres generaux de la langue de cette grande epoque relativement a la signification des mots, a l'usage des diverses parties du dis cours, a la syntaxe et a la construction des phrases.
