- Soudain, le rêve se brise. Une dénonciation anonyme et le voilà emprisonné au château d'If. Qui l'a trahi ? Pourquoi ? Dantès l'ignore, mais il se le jure: sa vengeance sera terrible.
- Ce roman, originellement publié sous forme de feuilleton, narre l'histoire d'un jeune homme, Edmond Dantès, tout juste débarqué de l'île d'Elbe à Marseille, et qui est faussement accusé de bonapartisme par des amis jaloux.
- Emprisonné durant quatorze ans sans bénéficier d'un procès, Dantès n'a plus qu'une obsession quand il est libéré se venger des conspirateurs qui lui ont volé sa jeunesse.
- Bénéficiant en captivité de l'enseignement et des lumières de l'un de ses compagnons d'infortune, l'abbé Faria, il reconstitue par déduction le fil des événements qui l'ont conduit dans sa geôle. Enfin sorti, il devient riche et puissant et poursuit sa vengeance.
- Le Comte de Monte-Cristo est, avec Les Trois Mousquetaires, le roman le plus célèbre d'Alexandre Dumas. Connu et adapté dans le monde entier, on peut dire qu'il connaît toujours le même succès de nos jours et qu'il traverse toutes les générations comme il a déjà traversé toutes les frontières.
- Cela peut se comprendre aisément: quand on songe un instant au résumé de l'intrigue, on s'aperçoit à quel point cette histoire aurait pu être écrite de nos jours. Un jeune homme, victime de l'avidité, de la jalousie et de l'ambition de trois autres, se retrouve injustement enfermé en prison durant quatorze ans.
- Il finit par s'évader et par trouver un extraordinaire trésor qui fait de lui un nabab digne des Mille et Une Nuits, mais aussi un capitaliste qui va user de sa puissance pour assouvir sa vengeance. Du reste, ses adversaires sont devenus entre-temps un sénateur, un banquier et un procureur de justice. Si Dumas avait vécu de nos jours, il y a fort à parier que son Dantès moderne aurait eu exactement les mêmes adversaires: les représentants de la politique, des finances et de la justice.
