Lorsque Emmanuel de Portugal, en 1517, abandonna ses pr'tentions sur les Canaries, il y comprit express'ment l'ile cach'e En 1526, une exp'dition partit des Canaries 'a sa r' cherche, sous le commandement de Fernando de Troya et de Fernando Alvarez; mais elle ne fut pas plus heureuse que les pr'c'dentes. En 1570, un certain Pedro Vello affirma qu'il avait d'barqu' dans cette +le, et m'me qu'il y avait remarqu' des traces de pas humains doubles de l'ordinaire. Malgr' l'imrai semblance de ce r'cit, F. De Villalobos voulut encore tenter l'aventure, mais sans r'ussir davantage. Comme pourtant les apparitions se multipliaient, et que toutes les_fois elles 'taient constat'es par un grand nombre de t'moins, une fi'vre de curiosit' s'empara des Canariens. En d'part de Lo renzo Pinedo et de G. Perez de Acosta. En 1721, don Juan de Mur, gouverneur de l'archipel, confie Gaspard Dominguez un navire qui part de santa-cruz et y rentre apr's plusieurs mois de courses inutiles sur l'oc'an.
