"¡Justicia! El Movimiento Nuevomexicano por las Mercedes,1956-1968" es una crónica detallada del movimiento de protesta considerado el acto más agresivo de agitación social en la reciente historia de los Estados Unidos. El movimiento nació del deseo de exigir justicia ante la desposesión de tierras antiguamente concedidas por la Corona española, llamadas "mercedes" o "land grants" en inglés. Los activistas se movilizaron en contra de las argucias legales que permitieron una descomunal "land grab" (apropiación de tierra) ocurrida en el Suroeste estadounidense. La lucha empezó con la anexión de dichas tierras, pero hubo que esperar hasta la década de los sesenta para que el movimiento de protesta social alcanzara su apogeo, convirtiéndose en el movimiento de protesta social más significativo de la reciente historia del estado de Nuevo México.
Esta docu-novela describe los problemas históricos y legales específicamente vinculados con las concesiones de tierra, mediante una serie de episodios escritos en un estilo novelesco cuya narración presenta las interacciones de los protagonistas de dicho movimiento. El idioma castellano estándar de la narración alterna con el español nuevomexicano propio del norte del estado, dejando aparecer alguna que otra expresión en inglés, una característica del habla mixta de la población retratada. La obra también presenta las numerosas perspectivas de lo que supone la desposesión de tierras mediante viñetas en que se suceden letra de corridos y alabados así como cuentos populares que vuelven a dar voz al pueblo.
