Excerpt from Journal of the House of Representatives of the Twelfth General Assembly of the State of Iowa: Which Convened at the Capitol, in Des Moines, Iowa, Jan. 13, 1868
The total amount expended for the support of common schools during the last year, was making eight dollars and four cents paid for each pupil in attendance during the year, and five dollars and fifty five cents per capita for the entire number of school age, and the sum of two dollars and twenty nine cents per capita for the entire population of the State, as shown by the recent census.
