What they don't realize is that invasions can come from inside their neighborhood as well as from outside, and that they are already endangered by the unknown secrets of Hickory Road itself. Most dangerous of all: in the basement of the empty house at number 16 a trapdoor opens down into a labyrinthine series of tunnels that lead to - nobody knows where or what.
