In these pages an attempt has been made to treat, as fully as possible, the subject of incubation, natural and artificial, to explain the physical laws bearing thereon, to discuss the principles and conditions of Nature's method, to see wherein, and to what extent, those principles are applicable to the attificial method, and to endeavour to show the various in?uences that may affect, either beneficiallv or deleteri-ously, the embryonic development of the chick in its different stages. Although artificial incubation is not new, it is only in recent vears that it has come into prominence, and there are, as yet, considerable conjecture and uncertainty concerning the causes of success or failure. If this book throws any light upon the subject, or assists the amateur incubator-operator to secure better results, or in any way hastens the day when the artificial method will, to the advantage of all concerned, entirely supersede the natural one, its mission will have been fulfilled.
