The volume examines the founding of the Order's capital city, Valletta, in the mid-sixteenth century also through an overview of its official palaces, the Auberges, and its relations with the great European capitals. The author's investigation of numerous documentary sources and constant architectural references, also in connection with the theoretical treatises that circulated in Europe and are conserved in the Order's Library, provide new ways to analyze both historically and critically the Hierosolymitan heritage in Valletta.
