Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Humanity and the Man: A Poem

IN looking to the history of man, so far as it is known to us, we observe, that in his progress towards his pre sent standard of civilisation, he seems to have entered upon, or passed through, four stages. In the first stage, as recorded in the Bible and supported by the authority of scientists, we find him of necessity placed in a tropical region, unclothed, exempt from manual labour, sustained by fruits, and living in a state of unconscious happiness; for his struggle for existence had not yet commenced. In the second stage, we find him clad in skins removed from this paradise.
