Ebenso glauben wir uns uber das eigene Urteil Wolfs uber diese seine Kritiken ohne Verletzung der Pietat hinwegsetzen zu durfen. In seiner reifsten Zeit hat er sich gelegentlich geauert, da er solche Kritiken heute (das war 1896) nicht mehr gelten lassen wurde, nicht, weil er sich damit geschadet habe oder ihren Inhalt nicht verantworten konnte, sondern weil sie ihm nicht gut genug geschrieben dunkten. Diese wohl allzustrenge Selbstkritik an der Form darf uns nicht veranlassen, den kostbaren inhalt zu verleugnen, zumal man wei, da Wolf auch von seinen musika lischen Schopfungen in auerst rigoroser Beurteilung manche nicht veroffentlicht hat, die gleichwohl heute das Entzucken von Laien und Fachmannern erregt. Wir erinnern lediglich an das Werk, welches er zu derselben Zeit geschaffen hat, in welcher er die Kritiken schrieb, an seine penthesilea' welcher vielleicht eben dieselben Formfehler Uberschwang und Mangel an Selbstbeschrankung, an haften, um welcher willen ihr Schopfer sowohl dieses Werk seit der ersten unglucklichen Probe in seinem Koffer zeitlebens ver schlossen gehalten, als auch seine Kritiken tadeln zu mussen ge glaubt hat. Gerade die Erkenntnis dieses uberaus strengen Ma stabes, den er stets an seine eigenen Erzeugnisse legte, lehrt uns aber um so mehr, seine scharfen Urteile uber das Schaffen anderer zu verstehen und zu wurdigen.
