At the commencement of the Revolutionary war, in 1776, Congress offered a bounty to the officers and soldiers who should enlist and serve during the war, of. Both money and land. At the close of the war, in 1783, the Legislature Of the State of New York, took action with regard to these promised bounty lands, 'not only with a view Of discharging the aforesaid engagement of Congress, but, in consider ation of the virtue and patriotism of the troops of' New York, to add thereto a large gratuity of State lands.
