Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Hints on Public Architecture: Containing, Among Other Illustrations, Views and Plans of the Smithsonian Institution, Together With an Appendix Relative to Building Materials
Of the illustrations which enrich his work, he may be allowed to say, that he regards them as creditable to American art. A portion of these are from original designs; but where examples of ancient Architecture, not found on our Continent, are given, these, from the necessity of the case, are copied from illustrations in European works the source whence each is derived being, in every case, acknowledged. There was no alternative but to pursue this course, or else to send a draughtsman, at an expense which the object would not justify, to the various countries of Europe and Asia where the originals are found.
