Publisher's Synopsis
A band of survivalists take over a Ranger Station on top of a mountain in the arid high plateau country of Eastern Oregon, where there are more square miles than people. The Sheriff of Lake County and the mayor of its County Seat have to figure out how to cooperate with State and Federal authorities. Along the way we meet the eccentric people that live there among the spectacular desolation of the landscape. Among them are a philosopher hermit, a lost boy-man, an imaginative conspiracy theorist, the Mayor himself, a wealthy retired artist, the Sheriff, a woman of the world who came home to wear cowboy boots, an African woman agronomist who looks like a movie star and knows all about cattle, and a cast of unforgettable characters. What is the future for the desert West? This is the question that needs answering.
