Publisher's Synopsis
"University museums and collections are an important part of the nation's heritage, and the universities hold them in trust." With this statement, published in its annual report 1986/87, the Museums and Galleries Commission called upon all area museum councils to survey the museum collections held by universitites in their region. This report is the third in the series, and its primary purpose is to highlight, and in some cases discover, collections of materials which for one reason or another have been aggregated by the eleven universitites in the north of England. The report, like its predecessors in London and in Scotland, reveals a significant number of collections which for a variety of reasons receive no formal support from their universitites and no identifiable financial support from the University Funding Council. Their plight, often desperate, is revealed as the survey uncovers a whole range of difficulties.
