'Esther Waters' (1947) sees Bogarde take on his first starring role as William Latch, a dashing squire who impregnates one of his servants, Esther Waters (Kathleen Ryan). To everyone's surprise, Esther faces down local disapproval and resolves to bring up the child on her own. Finally, 'The High Bright Sun' (1964) is set against the background of Cyprus' struggle for independence from British rule in the 1950s. Bogarde stars as British Intelligence Officer McGuire, whose sense of duty imperils the life of the woman he loves.
