Macaw is a common name for about 18 species of the parrot family of birds that are native to the rain forests of Central and South America. The macaw is a large bird with vibrantly colored plumage and the curved beak and talons typical of the parrot. They're very social birds, living in pairs, family groups or flocks, depending on their stage of life. The male and female macaw look the same, which is atypical of many bird species. Macaws, which are very popular as pets, can live up to 50 years. Because of their popularity as pets, some species are becoming scarce in the wild and are listed as endangered. They're adept at imitating sounds and can be taught to say several simple words. Their diet consists of fruits, seeds and leaves found in tropical settings.
