Publisher's Synopsis

This book is a collection of stories of the Chowning family's adventures as missionaries on the Amazon River. The original plan was to take 4 teenagers to experience life outside the US for 18 months, but it is now 18 years that we have been living the life. Charles William Chowning (father)was a theology student dropout when he went on the adventure but since going to the Amazon, he has five theological degrees along with various specialization studies. Wife Lydia found her passion teaching English to military officers and professionals. The teenagers were affected by their time there; one married a Brazilian. Two returned after college and are a big part of the mission. The fourth hopes to be a counselor. Charles William is legally blind with glaucoma at this time but still continues to bless others with visitation on the river, providing Christian literature, and preaching. Other parts of the ministry include providing reading glasses for elderly and basic medicines to communities in epidemics, and giving Christmas gifts to poor children. We also help with translation and interpretation for students, visiting mission groups, and tourists. It is our hope that this book encourages you to get involved in missions in a big or small way. You may not think you could do something important but even mission support can be awesome help for someone. If somehow this book encourages you, we would love to hear from you.
