La Sforza a sua volta incomincia col dire che ha ricevuto da Margherita Pobbia la copia di una lettera ove si dice male della poesia e dei poeti, e che, mossa dall'amore che ha sempre portato a quella, vuole ora difenderla dalle accuse che le vengon dirette. Prima di tutto, osserva, se la Poesia non fusse cosa piena di riverenza, non si sarebbe degnato il grande Apostolo di Tarso cittar nelle sue divine pistole versi di Epimenide e di Menandro S. Dionigi, nelle proprie opere, si valse moltis simo della poesia; Girolamo, Ambrogio, Agostino, Fulgenzio, tutti insomma i sacri Dottori, si servirono spesso dei poeti. E Gesù Cristo non ebbe a sdegno di usar le parole di Terenzio, contra Paulo, quando li disse: dura cosa ti è il calcitrar contra lo stimolo e molti ammaestramenti ci diede per parabole con venienti a lo stil comico Per l'onore di aver dato la nascita ad Omero disputano sette città; gli Scipioni fecero Ennio par tecipe del medesimo sepolchro il poeta Teofane di Mitilene fu caro a Pompeo; il Petrarca carissimo a Roberto di Napoli; da tutti insomma sono onorati i poeti. Di più, essi sono anche teologi: come Orfeo, Lino, Museo; Dante che trattò sotto poe tico velame quanto si contiene nel sacro seno della santa Theologia Mosè, Giobbe e David; Sedulio e Prudenzio; lo spagnolo Giuvenco che sotto coperta di huomo, di bue, di lione e di aquila si felicemente espresse le divine attioni di Gesù Christo. Anche l'eneùle è una perpetua loda della virtù da essa s'impara la clemenza verso i nemici, la tolleranza delle fatiche e dei pericoli, l'amore della patria e dei parenti, la for tezza d'animo nel frenar le passioni amorose, la liberalità verso l'ospite, la pietà per i defunti, la prudenza, la fede. Cosi anche Orazio, Giovenale e Persio ci porgono egregi ammaestramenti.
