Larissa spends an afternoon at Freddie's. She is intrigued by what he shows her and wants to chat about it with her dad. But he overreacts. An egg for the face for one, please! How do you explain to children that, as they get older, certain behaviour becomes less socially acceptable? At what stage and how do ask them to keep certain bits and pieces of theirs private? This story aims to help parents start the conversation. It was initially written for 3 - 4 year olds who start nursery and reception, and who need to learn to treat their peers with sensitivity and respect while expecting the same for themselves. It is the grown ups in "Freddie's Privates" who end up feeling awkward, to the satisfaction of the child listening to the story. Explaining the grown ups' embarrassment should make the point without embarrassing the child. When read to a slightly older audience of 5+, the story can serve as an introduction to the topics of personal safety and the necessity to report anything they feel uncomfortable about to their parents.
