The first Of the important German engravers whose names have survived was martin schongauer, who is represented in this collection by his Virgin and Father Enthroned (n O. According to Mr. Hind, Of the British Museum, the course of artistic tradition passed from The Master of the Playing Cards (1446) through a master probably of Strassburg, whose initials were E. S., and in whose workshop it is conjectured schongauer learned his art.
