The Editor has done the best that he could with 50 vast a mass of materia] in the space of time that could be devoted to it. It has been, of course, out of the question to give more than a very few rolls in extenso, by way of specimens. In the case of the others, those particulars which seemed of most interest or importance have been extracted under their various heads. In such a work it has been difficult to avoid some needless repetitions, and it is to be feared that some things may have been omitted that ought to have been included. But the original rolls will remain at the service ofany scholars who may be stimulated to further research, and, should the gleaning of the grapes ever prove to be better than the vintage, no one would be better pleased than the present Editor. It is believed, however, that the ?avour of the latter will be found quite equal to that of anything of the same kind that has hitherto been provided for such as care for these matters.
