No es ésta una coleccion de cartas particularmente interesantes por tal 6 cual determinado concepto, morales, politicas, literarias, familiares ó de otra clase cualquiera menos aún es un repertorio de todas las cartas más ó ménos nota Hesque registra la bibliografía española. Ya lo dijimos en la Introduccion al tomo pimero de este Epistolario, dado a luz veinte años há por la índole misma de la pblicacion de que forman parte estos dos volúmenes, el colector del Epistolario encuentra ligado á condiciones dadas, en fa composicion de su libro, que no k es lícito alterar. Necesita, lo primero, prescindir absolutamente de todos quellos escritores cuyas obras completas, 6 siquiera escogidas (y adviértase que éstos son, cabalmente, por regla general?, los más ilustres en nuestra histo rialiteraria) figuran ya, 6 deben figurar, por estar prometidas al público en esta biblioteca DE autores espanoles; necesita, lo segundo, abstenerse de darle un arácter especial, digámoslo así, é imprimirle el de generalidad que expresa su título. De lo primero han de resultar, por_precision, notables vacíos en la econo mía del libro: á primera vista echará en él de menos el lector las cartas conoci disimas, cuanto excelentes, de santa Teresa de Jesus, por ejemplo, de Quevedo, ¿jovellanos, del P. Isla y de tantos otros que la biblioteca ha publicado 6 publicará en los volúmenes respectivos de estos autores; lo segundo será causa de que se observe en él cierto desórden inevitable, nacido de la incoherencia de lu materias tratadas en estas cartas, de las diferentes épocas á que pertenecen, y de la consiguiente desigualdad en el mérito y estilo de cada escritor.
