Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Encyclopaedia Edinensis, Vol. 4 of 6: Or a Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature
The ancient Germans adored the sun, moon, and earth; they worshipped Thor the god of thunder, and Odin the god ofwar, with the other deities of the north, not in temples, but in woods, groves, and de sert places; their priests bore some resemblance in manners, and in the in?uence which they exercised over the minds of the people, to the Druids of the Celtic nations; and their belief in omens and oracles, as well as the other features of their religion, has given rise to the opinion that they, and all the Gothic tribes, derive their origin from Persia.
