The volume is part of a series of studies on the theme "Encounter with strangers", conducted by a multidisciplinary research group based at the Department of History, Lund University.;Inga Holmberg's article deals with Swedish immigrant women in Jamestown New York and contains an incisive and critical analysis of concepts such as ethnicity, ethnic pluralism and assimilation.;The aim of Goran Rystad's article is to demonstrate the manner in which people of differing social, regional and political affiliations regarded the race question at the turn of the century, above all the sensitive issue of social equality.;The third contribution likewise focuses on problems related to the Afro-American identity. Following a discussion of the 'race' and 'ethnic group' Jasmine Aimaq's article seeks to discern and analyze the development of the Afro-American position in US society in a historical perspective.
