Publisher's Synopsis
Made while the director, Nagisa Oshima, was being prosecuted for the publication of the script to his previous film, the controversial 'Ai No Corrida' ('Empire of the Senses'), this companion piece to the earlier film won the Best Director Prize for Oshima at the Cannes film festival in 1978. Here the action is set in Japan in 1895 when a wife and her young lover, a recently discharged soldier, murder the wife's elderly husband, a rickshaw man, only to be haunted three years later by the old man's ghost. Their crime haunts them and ultimately they are caught by a cruel policeman.
