Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from El Pájaro Verde
Juan valera Y alcalá galiano (born 1827) differs from other contemporary Spanish writers inasmuch as he is a thorough cosmopolitan. Although he has passed many years at the legations of half the civilized world, his writ ings are the very embodiment of Spanish thought and feel ing, and it is in them that we find the most vivid pictures of life in his native province of Andalusia.
Valera has been before the literary public since 1856 and is a member of the Spanish Academy. His best literary work may be seen in the novels Pepita Jiménez, Doña Luz, and Comendador Mendoza. He excels in beauty of style and in the delicate use of language, always seeming to employ the appropriate word and always expressing himself with the greatest clearness. These qualities commend him to the student of Spanish.
The present little story, the author tells us, is a popular tale transcribed by him from memory. In common with all of Valera's work, it is written in the purest Spanish, while it is especially suitable for early reading on account of the simplicity of its language.
