Publisher's Synopsis

Demeter: A Mask is a poetic play written by Robert Bridges, first published in 1905. The play is based on the Greek myth of Demeter, the goddess of agriculture and fertility, and her daughter Persephone, who is abducted by Hades, the god of the underworld. The play explores themes of grief, loss, and the power of nature. In the play, Demeter is consumed with grief after her daughter is taken away from her. She wanders the earth in search of Persephone, and in her despair, she neglects her duties as the goddess of agriculture, causing famine and suffering for humanity. Eventually, she discovers that Persephone has been taken to the underworld, and she confronts Hades to demand her daughter's release. The play is written in verse and features a chorus of nymphs who comment on the action and offer insight into the characters' emotions. It is a powerful exploration of the human experience of loss and the ways in which we cope with grief. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
