Excerpt from Commentar �ber den Brief Pauli an die R�mer
Ausbildung vorliegende Tradition nennt nun bekanntlich den Ape stel P etrus als Gr�nder der r�mischen Gemeinde. Er soll schon im zweiten Begierungsjahre des Kaisers Klaudius (42 n. Chr.) nach Rom gekommen und daselbst f�nf und zwanzig Jahre lang bis zu seinem Tode erster Bischof ewesen sein. Indess dies ist nur als eine von der protestantis en Theologie mannigfaeh und hiuliinghch widerle'gte auch von vornrtheilsfreien Katholiken als unbegr�ndet erkannte Sage zu betrachten, mit der, von allem An deren abgesehen schon die Existenz, wie der Inhalt des R�mer briefes in eutsehiedenem Widerspruche steht. Denn wenn es nach R�m. 15, 20. Pauli Grundsatz war, das Evangelium nur da zu rnk�ndigen, wo der Name Christi noch nicht genannt ward, um nicht auf einen fremden Grund zu bauen, vgl. 2 Cor. 10, 15. So w�rde er sich nicht vorausgesetzt dass die B�mergemeinde Petri Stiftung und Eigenthum war schon vor der Abfassung des R�merbriefes �fter vorgesetzt haben, nach Rom zu kommen, um auch dort sein Apostelamt auszurichten, R�m. 1, 13. 15, 22. Vgl. Ag. 19, 21. Diesen Vorsatz hatte er doch sicherlich nicht fr�her gefasst, als er den europ�ischen Boden betrat. Dies geschah aber erst etwa 10 Jahre nachdem, jener Sage zufolge, Petrus als Apo stel und Bischof der R�mer aufgetreten war. Da nun von da ab Paulus, seinen eigenen Grunds�tzen gem�ss Rom nicht mehr als Zielt seiner apostolischen Wirksamkeit ins Auge fassen konnte, so konnte er es �berhaupt niemals, und muss also in den ange f�hrten Stellen entweder sich selbst oder die romische Sa 0 L� en ltrafen. Selbst die Abfannng eines seine pers�nliche Wir eit vertretenden Briefes muss uns unter solchen Umst�nden als undenkbar erscheinen, noch dazu eines Briefes, der in keiner Weise auf die vorausgegaugene und fortdauernde Lehrth�tigkeit Petri R�cksicht nimmt und sich zu ihr in Beziehung setzt, ja der nicht einmal bei den vielen Gr�ssen, die K. 16. Enth�lt welche eine genaue Bekanntschaft mit Lehrern und Gliedern der r�mischen Gemeinde voraussetzen lassen, einen Gruss f�r den, jener Sage zufolge, da mals in Bern residirenden Bischof Petrus enth�lt. Hat nun Petrus die r�mische Gemeinde nicht gestiftet, (eine andere davon uu abh�ngige Frage ist die ob er nicht in sp�terer Zeit in Rom ge wesen d daselbst den M�rtyrertod gestorben sei so hat sie auch anderer Apostel gestiftet weil kein anderer von der Geschichte namhaft gemacht wird und der gegen Petri Stiftung angef�hrte Grund auch gegen die Stiftung jedes anderen spricht. Es muss nun aber als sehr wahrscheinlich bezeichnet werden, dass diejenigen evangelischen Lehrer, welche die in Rom etwa schon vorgefundenen, zentreuteu Christen sammelten ihre Zahl durch Verk�ndigung des Evangeliums mehrten einen eigentlichen christ lichen Gemeindeverband herstellten und unter ihre Leitung und Pflege nahmen, die demnach als die ei entliehen Gr�nder der B� mrgemaindo zu betrachten sind S �ler des Apostels Paulus waren.
