Ben presto que' non pi� Leti e Gentili aspirarono al dominio d'italia, della quale ilongobardi avean posto la chiave in balia de' Franchi cedendo costoro le Valli di Susa e d'aosta e per� i principali passaggi dell'alpi fino alle Chiuse nella Marca di To rino. Carlomagno non venne di lungi, quando e' venne alle Chiuse nel 774; ma ioonfini del vasto suo regno distendeansi di qua da' Monti nella nostra Penisola. Il regno Longobardo avrebbe dovuto restituirsi da lui a Roma l'antica Signora delle genti e soprattutto del I' Occidentale Imperio al che lo stringeva la sua nuova qualit� di Patrizio de' Romani, affatto diversa da quella conceduta in altro tempo a Clodoveo. Dallo studio della diver sit� de' due Patriziati e dall' investigar la natura delle promesse fatte da Pipino in Francia indi rinnovate da Carlomagno sul Corpo di San Pietro in Roma pende tutto il concetto della Storia d' Italia nell' ottavo secolo: sulle quali ricerche un' insolita luce si sparse dal Hammanio Fantuzzi... che qui da me si ristampa.
