Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Christmas Books and Stories

It was when at Lausanne in the summer of 1846 that Charles Dickens first had the "ghostly and wild idea" which he developed later into this story. It was when at Broadstairs during the autumn of 1847 the actually began the little tale which was destined to be the last of the Christmas Books, On September 12 of that year he sent the first few slips of The Haunted Man to John Forster, with an intimation that if he did it at all it must be completed in less than a month - a serious task seeing how difficult he was feeling the production of Dombey and Son at the time. A week later and his faithful adviser had a further and more decisive letter on the subject: "Have been at work all day and am seedy in consequence. Dombey takes so much time, and requires to be so carefully done that I really begin to have serious doubts whether it is wise to go on with the Christmas book. Your kind help is invoked. What do you think? Would there be any distinctly bad effect in holding this idea over for another twelve month?
