In 1839 a suite of frame class-rooms, one story and a half high, was erected on Christy Avenue, and in 1846 a large three story building, adjoining the above, was completed; the second story of the latter furnished accommodations for a parish school. The corner-stone of St. Xavier Church was laid with great solemnity in the spring of 1840. On Palm Sunday, 1843, the sacred edifice Opened its doors for public services.
