Ven algunos historiadores en los grandes descubrimientos y extraordinarios sucesos, m�s bien la obra colectiva que el es fuerzo individual. Opinan que los tenidos por genios son instru mentos accidentales de la ley de progreso, porque cuanto fue deb�a suceder, y con este criterio refieren tranquilamente los hechos de los individuos y de los pueblos, sin asombrarse de nada, dado el inevitable enlace que en ellos imaginan. Como todo genio aparece tras de generaciones cuyos trabajos apro yecha, a imitaci�n de las plantas que se nutren con los restos de otras que fueron, en esos trabajos anteriores fijan principal mente su atenci�n, y a ellos atribuyen la mayor parte del m� rito, no concediendo al hombre eminente otro valor que el del t�rmino medio de una proporci�n continua, t�rmino que parti cipa de consecuente y de antecedente, t�rmino que responde a un estado de madurez propicio para alcanzar un fruto, ya por su propia saz�n pronto a desprenderse. Argumentos, al parecer poderosos, les suministra para esta su opini�n el grandioso descubrimiento de Am�rica. �fue en realidad Crist�bal Col�n quien hall� un Nuevo Mundo? M�s bien lo atribuyen a la br�jula y a la aplicaci�n del astrolabio al arte de navegar, porque con tales inventos, conseguidos por una civilizaci�n adelantada, se exim�an los marinos de la servi dumbre � la tierra y, en vez de limitarse a costear temerosos_�.
