Publisher's Synopsis
Although Theravada Buddhism is sometimes depicted as a dry rationalistic system, the living Theravada tradition exhibits a warm current of devotion focused on the sublime figure of the Buddha, the All-Enlightened One. In the Pali Canon the Buddha's excellent qualities are extolled in a classic formula of nine terms which serves as the basis for both Buddhist devotion and the meditative recollection of the Buddha. In the present book the author has used this formula as a key for collecting a rich variety of texts from the Pali Canon illustrating each of the Buddha's nine outstanding virtues.
