Publisher's Synopsis

It is a novel of 1877 written by the English Anna Sewell. It was composed in the last years of her life, during which she was confined at home due to disability. The work is narrated in the first person as an autobiographical memory told by a horse named Azabache, starting off with his happy days as a foal on an English farm, continuing his difficult life in London pulling cabriolets, until his happy retirement in the country. During his way, he encounters many difficulties and tells many stories of cruelty and kindness. Each small chapter tells an incident in Azabache's life that contains a lesson or moral typically related to kindness, sympathy, and also about the treatment of horses; With detailed observations and extensive descriptions of equine behavior, the novel is given a nice touch of verisimilitude. The author could see the immediate success of her work, but she died only five months after its publication.
