Excerpt from Biograf�a de Leon de Castro
Puesta p�r este en los �ltimos a�s de su vida, y que impri mi� en Salamanca el librer� C�n�va en 1555. El objet� que el C�mendad�r grieg� se pr�pus� en ell�, y l�s m�tiv�s p�r que tard� en llevarl� � cabo, y al fin n� pud� c�mpletar su pensamient�, l�s declara Le�n de Castr� en el pr�l�g� que pus� a dicha �bra, que copiam�s en parte � c�ntinuaci�n, no s�lamente para c�nsignar la que tuvo Le�n de Castr� en la publicaci�n de aquella �bra sin� c�m� muestra de su estil� en castellan�, que por cierto es bastante pesad�, desali�ado � inc�rrecto. Bien es verdad que �l mism� parece que se avergi�enza de escribir en castellan�, y da sus disculpas de hacerl� as�, c�m� quien teme que t�dav�a n� se las admitan. Achaque era este de otros much�s erudit�s de aquel tiemp�, y n� s�l� de Espa�a sin� de fuera de ella. El pr�l�g�, tal cual se imprimi� en la citada edici�n, c�n cuya revisi�n hub� de correr Le�n de Castro, dice as� pr�logo del Maestr� Le�n, Catedr�tic� de Prima y de Grieg� en la Universidad de Salamanca, s�bre los Refranes del C�mendad�r Hernan Nu�ez: trata del val�r y aut�ridad de los Refranes. Plat�n, en el primer libro de Rep., dize que quant� mas l�s h�mbres se van llegand� � la vejez, y se van perdiendo y secand� l�s deleytes del cuerp�, tant� mas se van encen diondo l�s desse�s de sciencias, y de la sabidur�a, y c�sas honestas. L� cual (segun parece de �tr�s lugares d�l, y de su disc�pul� Arist�teles) se deve entender en aquell�s que desde su ni�ez se emplear�n en seguir letras y virtud. P�r que est�s, es ciert� que quitados los impediment�s y estor v�s que el cuerp� en su frescura p�ne al entendimient� del -h�mbre, cuy� apetit� y desse� es natural a la scieneia y sa bidur�a, que es c�n�scimient� de Di�s, y cresciend� s�bre esto cada dia mas la vista de nuestra alma, para mej�r ver la herm�sura de la sabidur�a.
