Publisher's Synopsis

Jamgön Kongtrul Lodrö Thayé (1813-1899) was one of the most influential figures and prolific writers in the Tibetan Buddhist world. He was a founder and the single most important proponent of the nonsectarian Rimé movement that flourished in eastern Tibet and remains popular today. This volume includes the first English translation of Kongtrul's autobiography, A Gem of Many Colors, and two additional texts. The first, written by one of Kongtrul's close personal students, discusses Kongtrul's final days, his funeral, and the commemorative rites following his death. The second, authored by Kongtrul himself, recounts his past lives. Taken together, these three texts place Kongtrul firmly in his historical context as one of the most important Buddhist masters to ever hail from Tibet. The Autobiography of Jamgön Kongtrul is part of The Tsadra Foundation Series.

About the Publisher

Snow Lion

Shambhala Publications was born at Ground Zero of the 1960s counterculture: in the back of a bookstore on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, California. It's ironic, since our founders' vision was more trans-cultural than countercultural--the concern being for an enlightened approach to every aspect of life--including culture. It's a vision that hasn't changed in more than four decades, as we've crossed the continent, and as we've grown to discover just how much that original vision can contain.
