Boco, su rey, andaba empe�ado en poseer cierta par te de Numidia, que juzgaba pertenecerle, seg�n dec�a, por derecho de guerra. Gobernaba aquella naci�n Yu gurta, casado con una hija de Boco; hombre no menos astuto que ambicioso, dotado tambi�n de gran constan cia, y muy esforzado por su persona. A �ste movieron guerra los romanos para castigar la usurpaci�n del trono, que con muerte de dos sobrinos suyos hab�a conseguido. Estando la guerra tan vecina de sus Esta dos, no tard� el mauritano en enviar embajadores Roma, los cuales no quiso recibir el Senado, quedando por averiguar su intento, y Yugurta, que acaso hab�a logrado con oro y promesas el que en Roma, ya venal y corroinpida, no fueran recibidos los enviados de Boco, comenz� entonces a procurar la amistad y alianza de �ste con gran empe�o. Obtuvo una y otra, no sin obli garse antes � ceder a Boco, como la tercera parte del territorio de Numidia; pero la extremidad en que Mete lo, y luego Mario, tra�an puesta a Yugurta, pedia tanto sacrificio. Acude, pues, el mauritano en ayuda de su yerno, y enci�ndese la guerra con mayor �mpetu que nunca, juntas las fuerzas de entrambos. Durante ella hubo ocasi�n en que, los caballos moros y getulios (1) de Boco, pusieron a punto de rota el campo romano.
